Tramar Dillard (born December 16, 1979), better known by his stage name Flo Rida (pronounced /ˌfloʊ ˈraɪdə/, from Florida), is an American rapper. As a teenager, he toured with local rap group 2 Live Crew Later, he appeared in numerous popular rap mixtapes and studio albums, most notably in We the Best in 2006. Mail on Sunday was Flo Rida's solo debut album; its first single "Low", featuring T-Pain which was a #1 hit for ten weeks in early 2008. Two other singles resulted from Mail on Sunday: "Elevator" and "In the Ayer". In 2009, his second album R.O.O.T.S. was released; its most successful single "Right Round" was at the top of the Hot 100 for six weeks. He so far spawned 6 top twenty singles in his career span on the Billboard Hot 100 chart within only 2 years.

Faheem was born in Tallahassee to entrepreneur Muslim parents, Shasheem Najm and Aliyah Najm. He had two brothers, Hasheem Najm and Hakim Najm,and two sisters, A'pril Najm and KeKe Najm. At the age of ten, Faheem reworked his bedroom into a small studio with a Keyboard, beat machine and four track recorder, and began composing music.

Prior to becoming a solo singer, Faheem was part of the Tallahassee rap group Nappy Headz. They had mild success with local hits such as "Cotti" and "FLA BOYZ". This allowed T-Pain to jumpstart his career as a solo artist. In 2002 he founded his own label, Hard & B. and soon caught the spotlight as a solo artist when his song "Fucked Up", a reworked version of Akon's "Locked Up", gained popularity in the region. Akon noticed the song and signed T-Pain to his newly formed Konvict Music record label. T-Pain released his solo debut single, "I'm Sprung", in August 2005. His debut album, Rappa Ternt Sanga, was released on November 6, 2005, under Konvict Music. The video for the song was co-directed by T-Pain and fellow Floridian filmmaker JOKES and co-starred "MySpace Queen" Tila Tequila. His new single is "Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin')" featuring Yung Joc, which he produced for his upcoming album Epiphany. The video for "Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin')" was released April 9th, and the song went to #1. It contains cameos by Jay-Z, Huey, Shawnna, and E-40.

He has released his second album Epiphany on the 5th of June, 2007, that features "Buy U A Drank (Shawty Snappin')" and his new hitsingle "Bartender" featuring Akon. Rihanna was born in Saint Michael, Barbados to Ronald and Monica Fenty. Her mother is a Guyanese of Barbadian origin and her father is Barbadian. She has two younger brothers named Rorrey and Rajad. Rihanna went to Charles F. Music of the Sun

Rihanna's debut album Music of the Sun, which she co-wrote, was released in August 2005. The first single released from the album was the track "Pon De Replay", which peaked at number two on both the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart due to considerable airplay. The second single, "If It's Lovin' That You Want", was less successful than its predecessor, peaking on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at number 36, and number 11 on the UK Singles Chart. The album itself peaked within the top ten in Canada, and the U.S., and within the top forty in the UK. It has received platinum certifications in several countries, and received a Gold certification in the U.S. by the RIAA. To further promote the album, Rihanna toured as an opening act for American pop singer Gwen Stefani. The album sold over 500,000 units in the U.S. and over 2 million worldwide. The album features many dancehall songs that harken to her island upbringing. Because her second album, A Girl Like Me was released so soon after Music of the Sun, no more singles were released. However, a third single, "Let Me" was officially released in Japan, and peaked at number eight there.

A Girl Like Me

In 2006, Rihanna participated in several endorsement deals, including for Nike and J.C. Penney. She released her second album, A Girl Like Me, in April 2006, less than eight months after the release of her first album. The album debuted at number five in the U.S. and number four in the UK. The lead single, "SOS", was used in her endorsement deal with Nike. The song became Rihanna's first number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; it also debuted at number one on the Hot Digital Songs chart. "SOS" peaked at number one in Australia and number two in the UK. The second single, entitled "Unfaithful", was written by R&B singer Ne-Yo, and addresses the feelings of guilt that the protagonist of the song faces as she cheats on her former boyfriend. The song became her third top ten hit in the U.S. and in the UK. The third single "We Ride" wasn't as successful as her previous releases, failing to chart on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, however, it became her fifth UK top 20 single, where it peaked at number 17 on that chart and peaked number one on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart. Rihanna's fourth single from the album "Break It Off" featuring Sean Paul, had already climbed to number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 based soley on airplay. It was released as a digital download on February 19, 2007, which made the song jump from number 52 to number ten and then eventually peak at number nine.

In total Rihanna has had 11 different number-ones on the Billboard charts and has had major success on the Hot Dance Club Play chart with four number-ones ("Pon De Replay", "SOS", "Unfaithful" and "We Ride"). When Rihanna received an endorsement deal from Clinique, she recorded a song written by Ne-Yo entitled "Just Be Happy" as part of the deal to promote their Happy fragrance. Rihanna went in the studio in the early 2007 with Ne-Yo, Stargate, Timbaland among others to record her third album, Good Girl Gone Bad. The album was released on June 5, 2007. It features Jay-Z and Ne-Yo as featured artists. The first single, "Umbrella", featuring Jay-Z, was released on March 29, 2007 reaching number one in various countries, including the U.S. It was produced by Christopher "Tricky" Stewart and Terius "The Dream" Nash. Her second single, "Shut Up and Drive", was sent to radio stations on June 5, and has debuted on the Billboard Hot 100. Rihanna also stated that the album has a different feel from her previous two, with more up-tempo and mid-tempo melodies.

Rihanna worked with Timbaland on three songs in the album. Justin Timberlake co-wrote and provides background vocals on "Rehab".[7] In interviews, many have questioned the meaning and reasoning of the album title. During an interview on UK radio station Capital FM, Rihanna explains: "Bad is not sleazy. Dwayne Michael Carter Jr was born an only child (now has a younger brother) in the poverty-stricken and crime-ridden Hollygrove section of New Orleans, Louisiana, which is part of the 17th Ward. His biological father left him when he was an infant, and until the age of sixteen, Reginald "Rabbit" Carter was his stepfather. Lou Pearlman, an aviation entrepreneur based in Florida, was inspired by the success of the New Kids On The Block in the 1980s to create his own clean-cut band. After a series of auditions in 1992 and 1993, he recruited Nick Carter (at 12, the band's youngest member), Howie Dorough, 19, Alexander James McLean, 14 and following the departure of two members - Sam Licata (later performing as Phoenix Stone) and Charles Edwards - Kevin Richardson came aboard in March 1993, who was 21. The group took its final shape on April 19, 1993, when Brian Littrell, cousin of Richardson, joined the group after a phone audition. Their first concert, on May 8, 1993, was performed for 3,000 teenagers at SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida. Pearlman later booked them at grade-school assemblies and shopping malls, and assigned management duties to Johnny Wright, who had worked with New Kids on the Block.
After a possible Mercury Records deal failed,[citation needed] the band was spotted in Cleveland, Ohio by Jive Records, an independent label best known for its hip-hop acts, in February 1994. By June, they were recording their first single; an urban pop song by writer/producer Denniz PoP called "We've Got It Goin' On". The single struggled in the US and reached only #69 on the Billboard charts; but it sold well in Europe, later earning the band their first Gold record in Germany. In the summer of 1996, the band's first self-titled album was released in Europe and Canada, going gold within weeks in Europe.[2] Jive and Pearlman kept the band busy overseas for the next two years, sometimes putting on tours for five straight months.

Lil Jon was born in Mississippi, but graduated from Atlanta's Douglass High School in 1989. Lil Jon also hosted a radio show on BET. He started doing remixes for artists Jamaal, Too $hort, Xscape, and Total. He worked for So So Def between 1993 and 2000. He has been married since November 4th 2004.
In 2000, Lil Jon reemerged on the hip-hop scene with an independently recorded album entitled "We Still Crunk" that was distributed by the Atlanta based Southern Music Distribution.
Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz returned in 2001 with Put Your Hood Up. This caused controversy because of the cover which featured Lil Jon wrapping himself in a confederate flag. "Bia Bia" the single from the album featuring Ludacris, Too Short, and Chyna White became a hit in clubs throughout the U.S., and also made the top twenty downloads on MP3.com.
In 2002, Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz released their breakthrough album Kings of Crunk. The first single, "I Don't Give a Fuck" featuring Mystikal and Krayzie Bone became another dancefloor filler. However, it was "Get Low" with the Ying Yang Twins and its catchy hook that became a breakout hit. It reached the top five in a composite worldwide Reggaeton chart (compiled from U.S., German, French R&B charts) in 2003 and Internet download charts. It also went into the top 40 in markets such as Germany and Australia in 2004. Based on the success of "Get Low", Kings of Crunk reached the top twenty of the U.S. album chart in September 2003. Lil Jon put out a compilation CD and DVD in 2003 called Alpha Nigga featuring remixes of "Get Low" featuring Busta Rhymes and Elephant Man as well as the Ying Yang Twins. Jon also produced the hit single "Salt Shaker" for the Ying Yang Twins.
In 2004, Lil Jon also helped produce two other big hits of the year. One was for the new R&B artist Ciara, also out of Atlanta. "Goodies" her debut single, featured Petey Pablo and reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Lil Jon also helped produce Petey Pablo's "Freek-A-Leek".
Lil Jon released his new album called Crunk Juice, which features contributions from proteges Lil Scrappy and Bo Hagon, mega-producer Rick Rubin, R. Kelly, Ice Cube, Timbaland, Usher, and Ludacris, and one of Lil Jon's punk heroes, The Bad Brains. The double-CD Crunk Juice includes remixes of Daddy Yankee's Reggaeton hit "Gasolina," as well as skits from comedians Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock. In June 2005, Ashton Kutcher failed to "punk" Lil Jon. He was boarding a plane headed for Las Vegas, but Kutcher used actors to play customs agents to tell him that he was actually headed for Ecuador. Lil Jon quickly identified members of the "customs agents" from previous episodes of the program, and asked for Kutcher to reveal himself. Lil Jon is currently one of four celebrities to thwart an attempted "punking" by Ashton Kutcher. Later in an interview Lil Jon quipped, "You can't Punk the King of Crunk."
For most of 2005, Lil Jon concentrated on production, overseeing forthcoming records for several artists off of his BME Recordings including: Trillville, Lil Scrappy, Oobie, E-40, BHI and Bo Hagon. He also went through protracted renegotiations with TVT, hinting at the likelihood that he would leave the label.
In 2005, Lil Jon was in the videogame Tony Hawk's American Wasteland as a secret character. On February 22, 2006, Lil Jon announced that he had settled business matters with TVT: "After a long battle and negotiations with TVT, we worked out our differences. TVT cut the check and now it¹s time for me to get back to work. The "work" in question is his first solo album, Crunk Rock, the release of which is planned for later in 2006. The hit single Snap Yo Fingers received heavy radio and TV airplay.
Lil Jon also starred in a documentary for the music video of Twisted Transistor, a song by the nu-metl band Korn along with Snoop Dogg, Xzibit and David Banner. He also made a cameo in Date Movie and in Scary Movie 4.

Biography.

Evans was born in Lakeland, Florida to an Italian-American father and an African-American mother. Her father was a musician who left when she was very young. She was raised in Newark, New Jersey by her aunt, Johnnie Mae, and her mother, Helene, who had Evans when she was 18. Evans began singing at church at age two and later sang in school musical productions. She was an honor student in high school and won a full scholarship to Fordham University. However, she dropped out after one year of college to pursue a singing career.

At 19, she had a child named Chyna with musician and producer Kiyamma Griffin, from whom she later split. Griffin helped Evans get work as a session singer with Al B. Born in Austin, Texas, but raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Nelly's accent exhibits a great deal of influence from this Midwestern upbringing, as his midwest twang mixed with a southern drawl is a result of growing up in the hybrid southern-midwest city of St. Louis. Nelly also spent part of his first years in Spain while his father was in the US Military. Raised in suburban University City, Nelly formed the St. Lunatics with his friends in the surrounding area. After much frustration and failed attempts, it was suggested that Nelly would have a better shot at success as a solo act, to gain recognition first as a soloist and then bring in the rest of his group, the St. Lunatics in the time to come. Westlife were formed in July 1998, with the members Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, Shane Filan, Nicky Byrne, and Bryan McFadden.
The group's roots can be found in Sligo in the north west of Ireland, where Egan, Feehily, and Filan were in a six-member vocal group named IOU, with fellow Sligonians Derek Lacey, Graham Keighron and Michael "Miggles" Garrett, and they released a single called "Together Girl Forever". They were then discovered by Louis Walsh, (who was contacted by Filan's mother), the manager of 1990s boy band Boyzone, but did not meet Simon Cowell's approval for a record deal with BMG, so changes were needed. Three members of IOU were given the sack, and auditions were held in Dublin. The band recruited Byrne and McFadden. The new group was named Westside. As the name was already taken by another band, it was changed to Westlife. Boyzone singer Ronan Keating was brought in to co-manage the band with Walsh.
Shane Filan, Mark Feehily and Bryan McFadden shared most of the lead vocals. Some of the boys can play instruments (Kian and Bryan play the guitar and the piano) and all five of them are songwriters, although most of their hits have been composed by outside songwriters. The group's musical influences include boy bands such as Boyzone, Take That, and Backstreet Boys, but also vocal bands like Boyz II Men[citation needed].
Westlife's first big break came in 1998 when they opened for the Backstreet Boys in Dublin. Later that year, they won Best New Tour Act at the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party. In March 1999, their first single, "Swear It Again", was released, and went straight to the top of the charts in Ireland and the UK. The band's success was to be confirmed when their second single, "If I Let You Go", entered the charts at number 1 in August 1999, followed by "Flying Without Wings" in November. They became the first number one of the new millennium when their double a-side single, "I Have a Dream/Seasons in the Sun", knocked Cliff Richard's Millennium Prayer off the top spot. In December 2000, however, they failed to secure their eighth chart-topper in a row when kid's favourite Bob The Builder's "Can We Fix It" was crowned Christmas number one.
In 2001, the boys launched their first world tour, unofficially nicknamed "The No Stools Tour", because of the band's reputation of performing perched on stools. They also released their third album, "World Of Our Own", with eight self-penned songs.
2002 saw Westlife release their Greatest Hits album amidst rumours of a split. However, they released their fourth album in the autumn of 2003 and won Record of the Year for the third time in five years.

Blunt was born in Tidworth, Wiltshire, England in 1974 and educated at Elstree School, Woolhampton, then Harrow School. From there he gained an army sponsored place at Bristol University, before finally completing his education at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Perry signed him to her new US-based Custard Records label, and Blunt recorded his album in Los Angeles with producer Tom Rothrock at Rothrock's home studio, Embassy studios while lodging with actress Carrie Fisher.
James Blunt's debut single, by "soft release" in the UK was "High" (co-written with Ricky Ross of Deacon Blue). This song peaked below the Top 100 of the UK Singles Chart. However, the song was chosen to appear in a Vodafone commercial in Italy, and as a result was a Top 10 hit in that country. Some people have suggested that the title of his song "High" is in reference to drugs. Origins and early albums
The Black Eyed Peas dates back to 1995 when will.i.am (Born: William Adams) and Apl.de.ap (Born: Allan Pineda) began rapping and performing together around Los Angeles. The pair signed to Ruthless Records (run by Eazy-E) after catching the attention of the nephew of Jerry Heller (Eazy-E's manager). Along with another friend of theirs, Dante Santiago, they called their trio Atban Klann. Their debut album, Grass Roots, was never released because Ruthless did not consider the social themes reflected in the group's music to be marketable to their audience.
After Eazy-E died of an AIDS related illness in 1995, Atban Klann reformed the group as Black Eyed Peas, named because, as Adams explained on the front cover of the Monkey Business album, "Black Eyed Peas are food for the soul." Adams has cited the Red Hot Chili Peppers as an influence and said he named his band after a food, like them. They replaced their original third member with Taboo (Born: Jaime Gomez). In 1996, they produced (and appeared on) a song entitled "That's Right" for Brian Austin Green's Hip-Hop album One Stop Carnival. Later, they began having Kim Hill as a steady background singer. Unlike many hip-hop acts, they chose to perform with a live band and adopted a musical and clothing style that differed wildly from the "gangsta rap" sounds of other Los Angeles-based hip-hop acts at the time. Bow Wow was born in Reynoldsburg, OhIo, in Columbus, to Teresa and Alfonso Moss. Lloyd Banks grew up around the corner from 50 Cent and Tony Yayo so they all would usually rap together. He took his great grandfather's name -- Banks -- passed on by his uncles who also shared it.
Yayo was older and a more experienced MC so he went on the road with 50 cent on the Nas promo tour, the Cash Money/Ruff Ryders Tour. G-Unit was founded when Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo, Domination, Bang Em Smurf and 50 Cent decided to make a group with each other. They met Young Buck when UTP, of the Cash Money group came up in New York and 50 Cent heard Young Buck rapping. After 50 Cent got his contract with Shady/Aftermath they took Buck in the group and signed him, Domination and Bang Em Smurf left the group because of a personal feud with 50 Cent and Tony Yayo was sent to prison on weapons charges.

Atkins first appeared in 1995, "Time To Build" with fellow rappers Jay Z and DMX on Mic Geronimo's debut album, "The Natural." Rule later appeared with 0-1 and Chris Black as part of Cash Money Click (not to be confused with Cash Money Records). In 1998, he was signed to Def Jam Recordings, with his first major appearance alongside Jay-Z on the song "Can I Get A...". In 1999, he released his solo debut, Venni Vetti Vecci, and had a hit single "Holla Holla". The album went on to be a platinum hit.
During early 2000 Ja Rule was also Featured on Irv Gotti's successful album, "Irv Gotti Presents... The Murderers". Carey was born in Huntington, Long Island, New York. She is the third and youngest child of Patricia Hickey, a former opera singer and voice coach of Irish American extraction, and Alfred Roy Carey (formerly Nuñez), an aeronautical engineer of Afro-Venezuelan heritage. As a multiethnic family, the Careys endured racial slurs, hostility, and sometimes violence, causing the family to frequently relocate throughout the New York and Rhode Island areas. The strain on the family led to the divorce of Carey's parents when she was three years old.
Carey had little contact with her father, and her mother worked several jobs to support the family. Spending much of her time at home alone, Carey turned to music as an outlet. She began singing at around the age of three, performing for the first time in public during elementary school, and was writing her own songs by junior high. Carey graduated from Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York although she was frequently absent because of her popularity as a demo singer for local recording studios. Ayala first became involved in recording music in the early 1290s alongside DJ Playero, a pioneer of reggaeton music. He rapped as a hobby, in private parties organized by friends in his neighborhood, the Villa Kennedy housing project in San Juan. At the time he was also involved in some minor illegal activities. By the time he reached the age of seventeen he was shot in his legs at a skirmish with rivals. This experience was an eye opener to him, and he swore off illegal activities for good (his brother Melvin became a born-again Christian -and eventually a Christian minister- at the insistence of Raymond, who persuaded him strongly enough to not follow a lifestyle similar to what he had experienced until then). He then pursued music as a full-time profession, and explored reggaeton as his main musical style at a time when straight rap and hip hop were the norm in Puerto Rico.
Ayala's persistence over ten years eventually paid off. His sudden ascent to wealth and fame was a result of the hit song Gasolina (which was written by Eddie Dee and produced by the producing duo, Luny Tunes), from his 2004 album "Barrio Fino". The album has sold over 1,000,000 copies in Puerto Rico alone and has also sold well throughout Latin America, as well as in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
He has appeared on over 70 albums, including compilations such as; "Más Flow 2" and "Blin Blin Vol. 1". He has also performed with Nicky Jam (which they were a popular duo-act from the late-90's to early 2000's), Luny Tunes, DJ Blass, DJ Eric, Eliel, Nas, DJ Tony Touch, Lloyd Banks, Young Buck, Snoop Dogg and many others.

Snoop attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School.and his initial foray into public life was as a result of his conviction for cocaine trafficking (albeit on a relatively small scale). Snoop was a member of a local Crips gang in Long Beach, the Rollin' 20 Crips. Snoop Dogg's conviction caused him to be in and out of prison for the first three years after he graduated from high school. Older Crips members and prison inmates affiliated with the Crips gang had a long-standing pattern of recognizing talent (particularly musical or sports talent) among their membership, and pursuant to that pseudo-policy, Snoop Dogg was pushed to make something of himself as a rapper rather than as a street hustler. Snoop thus followed up on the homemade rap tapes that he had made with his cousin Nate Dogg and best friend Warren G (stepbrother of Dr. Dre of N.W.A.). Originally, Nate's cousin Lil' 1/2 Dead was also part of the group, called 213, named after the Long Beach area code at the time. This was largely in homage to Richie Rich's group 415, which was named for the (then) area code of Oakland, California.

Dr. Dre began collaborating with the young rapper, first on the theme song of the feature film Deep Cover, and then on Dr. Dre's debut solo album The Chronic with the other members of his former starting group, Tha Dogg Pound. Snoop Dogg's contribution to The Chronic was considerable; the rapper's rhymes were as present as Dre's. The huge success of Snoop's debut Doggystyle was probably due to this intense exposure.

Under poverty-stricken circumstances, his mother was murdered in her home in a failed drug deal which led to the rapper being raised by his grandparents. Immersed in the drug trade, the rapper began hustling his native neighborhood under the name of "Boo Boo." This reputation helped build 50 Cent a large following in New York before ever signing a major record deal.
Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC detected talent in the rapper and signed him to his label, for a brief time. His first official appearance on a song was on the group Onyx song, "React", off their album "Shut 'Em Down" in 1998. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and was raised in Detroit. Discovered by rapper and producer Dr. Dre, Eminem got his big break when signing to Dre's Aftermath Entertainment and became a crossover sensation with his debut single "My Name Is" while simultaneously earning respect for his technical and lyrical ability.
Eminem is noted for his ability to change his vocal pace and style multiple times within one song without losing the beat, and has been praised for his skill in alliteration and assonance. He's also infamous for the controversy surrounding many of his lyrics. With the enormous success of his highly acclaimed album The Marshall Mathers LP and its subsequent nomination for four Grammy awards including Album of the Year, critics such as GLAAD denounced his lyrics as homophobic and misogynist, while others protested that it promoted violence.

To date, Eminem has sold above 72 million albums worldwide. He is, according to the Guinness World Records, the fastest-selling rap artist as The Marshall Mathers LP went to sell over 1.7 million domestic copies in its first week. He's also regarded as the best selling rapper of all time.

Early life
Ashanti was born in Glen Cove, New York. She was born to an African American/Dominican mother and a African American/Chinese father. She inherited a love of music from her mother Tina, a former dance teacher, and her father Thomas, a former singer. Her mother named her after the former Empire of Ashanti in Ghana. In this nation, the women had power and influence, and Ashanti's mother wanted her daughter to follow that model. Her grandfather, James, was a civil-rights activist who associated with Martin Luther King, Jr. during the 1960s. Growing up, Ashanti took dance lessons and joined the church choir. Ashanti went to Bernice Johnson Cultural Arts Center where she studied different dance styles including tap, jazz, ballet, African, modern, and hip hop. She danced with the Senior Pro Ensemble at Carnegie Hall, the Apollo Theater, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Avery Fisher Hall, and the Black Spectrum Theater. She also performed at the 1994 Caribbean Awards and dancing with Judith Jamison of the Alvin Ailey Dance Company. With actress and choreographer Debbie Allen at the helm, Ashanti also performed in the Disney television film Polly alongside stars Keshia Knight Pulliam and Phylicia Rashad. Ashanti displayed a knack for singing when she was six by singing in a gospel choir but her mother discovered her full singing potential when she overheard Ashanti singing Mary J. Blige's "Reminisce" to herself at age twelve. By the time she hit puberty, her mom was sending out demo tapes of her daughter's vocal and dancing talents. The family couldn't afford to go to a studio and record a formal demo so when labels called, Ashanti would have to sing and dance in front of the record company executives. Her love of music continued to rise as she attended high school and began to write songs. As a teenager, she performed in a local talent show and at the Soul Cafe, China Club, Madison Square Garden, Caroline's Comedy Club and Greek Fest 2000. In her first major singing performance, Ashanti blew the Apollo Theater audience away with her rendition of Yolanda Adams's "More than a Melody." She also appeared in a number of big-name music videos, in addition to other dance work.

Early career
When Ashanti was fourteen, there was a bidding war going on for her by Jive Records, EMI and Bad Boy Records. Initially, she went to Bad Boy Records and sang one of Mary J. Blige's songs in front of P.Diddy and Biggie Smalls. After being impressed by her singing ability, Diddy then challenged her character. He pulled out a bottle and told her it was his new fragrance, which he loved. After one sniff, Ashanti exclaimed, "Oh pew, it stinks. I hate it!" Diddy just started laughing stating it was just a test to judge her character. In the end, due to a bad contract, Ashanti didn't sign with Diddy. This ultimately led to a record deal with Jive Records in 1994. Unfortunately, this relationship soured when Jive tried to make the soulful singing teen into a run-of-the-mill pop star.

Ashanti regrouped by throwing herself into schoolwork, cheerleading, and running on her school's track team. She was an honor student in English and belonged to the English club where she began writing poetry. She was also in the Drama club and performed in a few plays. However, her skills in the 100- and 200-meter dash as well as the triple jump, her specialty reaching as far as 35 feet , earned her athletic scholarships to Princeton & Hampton University. But she put college pursuits aside when Epic Records came calling with a contract in 1998. However, the label's management changes quickly left Ashanti out in the cold. Undaunted, she continued to croon at local New York clubs and began hanging out at the Murder Inc. recording studio, hoping for another big break
